How an Grumpy Old Man gave me perspective on life

Old Yeller

Unfortunately I'm not talking about the dog. I'm going to have to remember to get my camera out when I see this stuff in the future. Allow me to set the stage. I'm in a Pilot Gas station, in line to pay for my gas.

(Rabbit Trail: I always like to go inside because then I can guarantee the amount that will show pending on my account where-as the pump likes to pend for $1 and then post for the correct amount later.) (Also this video posted here isn't of the event I witnessed because I didn't have my camera there, but I thought it was funny so I thought I'd share it in good humor, lol) Anyhow...

I'm watching and listening to this old man yell at this cashier about what kind of rewards points they give on their Pilot myRewards Card. He's so irate that the other cashier starts to talk with him and explain things. The manager comes out and trying to explain things. He just keeps repeating himself over and over as if these people getting paid $6.25 an hour had anything to do with the person who told him the wrong info two years earlier or the Rewards Program itself and had the ability to instantly change it to be the way he thought he heard some person half explain it once 2 years ago. His primary complaint is that he's been using this card and stopping primarily at Pilot for 2 years and didn't get the points he thought he was getting.

It get's better...

Just when you start to think there's nothing more to say he says (and I paraphrase): "Don't you get it, you lied to your customer, you lied when you sold me this Rewards Card, you lied, you can't lie to your customer, you can't lie... You're just like Obama... You lie and lie and think you can get away with it..." and then I think he nearly started to cry or maybe he was gearing up for another round of verbal abuse, I'm not sure I paid by that point and had to go. The clerk helping me (who had been yelled at by this guy minutes before) and I were both feet away from Old Yeller and when I heard him start to bring up Obama I started to laugh out loud and the clerk saw me laugh and he almost laughed... It was a moment...

The Lessons

I've thought about this guy for nearly two months now. I wish I could say that I had the presence of mind to prayerfully address him head on and calm the situation and bring peace to the situation and show this man that he wasn't really mad about Rewards... But all I did was laugh to myself, partially out loud, and leave and ponder the lessons we could learn from him.You see I think there are some things we could learn from him.

Personal Growth:
If I were Him, I could learn:

  1. He was taking his frustration about a rewards card out on people that couldn't do anything to fix it.
    1. Am I guilty of abusing someone, even behind their back, for something that was really a situation created by people above them?
  2. He was allowing himself to be upset about "buying" a "free rewards" card. It's FREE.
    1. Who cares how they sold it, you didn't pay for it.
    2. Find out how it does work and move on.
    3. You are losing your peace over this? Really? This could be a sign that fear and money are your god now... watch it!
  3. Just like Obama... NOW we see the real issue.
    1. You are powerless over the direction of this country. A worldly leader has caused you direct and/or indirect harm (imagine that, politicians making bad decisions, who ever heard of such a thing) and you can't do anything about it. You feel like a victim and you want to lash out. You can't fix or control idiots in Washington, but you can try to make this man behind the counter feel small and beneath you. Oh... the abused just because the abuser.
    2. Watch out for reaction responses. All Words coming from your mouth and heart should be spoken in Love and seasoned with Grace. Are you being reactive instead of proactive.
Professional Growth:
If I were a company, I could learn
  1. I understand that He didn't pay for the card, but he did pay for the card through his dedication to shopping only at my store when he could have spent that money elsewhere and maybe that type of loyalty made me money. And maybe that type of loyalty doesn't come easy and I've now lost a customer, and his circle of influence, if I don't find a way to engage him through:
    1. Selective Agreement: Can I agree with him on some things?
    2. Empathy Statement: Get on HIS side of the situation and feel with him about it, see it from his point of view.
    3. Creative Solution: Find a way that you can say yes to something, even if you can't say yes to his request. It may be impossible for you as a cashier to do anything, but get your manager. It may be impossible as a manager to go back 2 years and credit points he thought he should have earned, or change a program you didn't design so that he'll get what he thought he was getting. But maybe you can comp his visit today and give him a free coupon for something next trip... or some peace offering.
    4. This sound like this:
      1. "WOW! I'm so sorry you were told XYZ,
      2. I can see how that would be frustrating when you feel like you should have gotten something and didn't.
      3. I don't have the power to do anything about how the Rewards Program works or any points you thought you should have gotten, but I can offer this as way to apologize for the wrong information you received. I can offer you __(fill in the blank)-to pay for your gas today, and give you this coupon for a free yadayada next time you come in.____; how does that sound?"

Summary

I was tempted to be upset or put off or angry at this man at first, for yelling at people about something so stupid. Then I started laughing about it, it really wasn't much more ridiculous than the video above. But really we all have these inner children just waiting to get out. It's up to us to choose Spiritual Growth. Be watching for other examples of people demonstrating how to behave, or not behave, in public. You can use the good ones as examples to follow, and learn just as much from the bad ones.

Have any examples of your own? Comment below.

The world is but stage and they actors in it are there for you to learn from, and sometimes you enter those stories and impact them with your own. How can you be an influence for Good Success today?

How to Avoid ATM Fees for the rest of your life!

I Don't Like Fees

I really don't like paying fees, especially when I can help it. I find that it's simply pouring money into a drain. Some of you don't really think about this. I know because I talk to some of you on a daily basis and I see it. Recently I talked to a young man who had been taking multiple $20 withdrawals from ATM's that don't belong to his bank. He pays his bank a $2.50 fee and the other bank that owns the ATM a $2.50 fee for each withdrawal. That is paying $5 on average to take money out of an ATM. $5 out of $20 is a 25% fee!

And yet I see people do this multiple times a month, month after month. This young man paid $60 in ATM fees in three months. It's ridiculous! Now before you go blaming the banks for being greedy let's take a moment to realize that SOMEONE has to pay for those machines and repair them and stock them, etc. But it doesn't have to be you paying them to do it. Let's talk about how...

How To Avoid ATM Fees

So here are the secrets of success when it comes to avoiding ATM Fees. It's actually very simple. Don't use a Non-YourBankHere ATM. Sounds simple right? OK, maybe not. You're out and about, realize you need cash for that thing you are doing later and you don't see and branches for your bank in sight. Before you go running to the ATM nearest you, here are some things to consider.

  1. Know Your Fees. Every bank, by law, has a fees and rates disclosure. Every bank has disclosures telling you any possible fee you could ever pay before you pay it. If you read through these you will find out what they are and avoid them. There really aren't any surprises unless you failed to read through the contract you agreed to. This Fees Disclosure makes it plain as day what fees you could pay, be familiar with them and make note of the ones that are likely to affect you.
    1.  ChaseWells Fargo, Bank of America, all of them must have a disclosure telling you every possible fee you could pay.
    2. Some banks reverse the fee you paid them, some reverse the fee you paid the other bank, most don't. If you have that arrangement find out the parameters. You may find it's only the first 1 or 2 or 4 per month.
  2. Use Your Bank's ATM. You bank probably isn't that far. Most people own a smart phone now days, or know someone who has one with you. If your bank has an ATM a mile out of your way, go there, take the extra minute, don't pay $5 to take $20 out!
  3. Cash Back. What if I told you that you could pay $1.69 or even $0.68 to take your money out and you'd get a prize for doing it?
    1. Nearly all of the Grocery Stores, Walmarts, Targets, and Gas Station Convenience stores in the United States offer "Cash Back". Rather than pay $5 and get nothing for it, pay $1.69 for a Dr Pepper and then when the machine asks Debit or Credit hit "Debit", enter you PIN, and request Cash Back "Yes". Now you paid $1.69 to take money instead of $5, you saved $3.31 and you got a Dr Pepper for it! Sometimes you just have to break down what you are really doing to yourself in basic math to see how silly it is.
  4. More is Less. If you absolutely must use an ATM that doesn't belong to your bank and there is even the slightest chance you will need more money soon, take the limit. Take $100 or $300 instead of $20. I mean if you are going to pay $5 anyway at least taking more prevents you from paying $5 again tomorrow, or even later today.

Save Money. Consider the Cost

It's ultimately up to you. You must count the cost. If you are paying for convenience and that's what you really need right now, it may be worth the fee once in a great while. I can guarantee you that if you are paying this fee more than a few times a year it's not worth the cost and you are failing to think through your money plan. Money has you running around instead of you telling your money what to do.

My preferred method of getting cash is Cash Back. It's the best way to go unless you have an ATM from your bank closer than the store. I'm at the store FAR more than I'm at or around any bank. Cash Back is the way to go!

Take the suggestions above and stop paying those fees!

Every dollar you spend today, is a dollar you can't spend tomorrow.

emClient Desktop Email and Calendar Tool Review

Desktop Email and Calendar Tool Review.

I don't want to spend a ton of time on this, but I think it's worth giving my hand to this OVER BLOGGED topic because MOST of the other blogs were helpful to a point, but they were the SAME blog post, almost verbatim, on different websites. Here is my journey. The other day I get fed up trying to boot Outlook and it took awhile to boot up, because my personal computer only has very little RAM and I haven't bothered installing more, and I'm just over it.

I also wanted an email/calendar app for the android phone, which I may have to write about too because I figured that out for now. In case you interested the short of that is that I am using the basic Gmail app for email and Outlook app for that email, and using aCalendar which actually just overlays on top of Google Calendar. So you are really using Google Calendar but aCalendar is a MUCH prettier interface! I was trying to use Outlook calendar but on the Android but they seem determined not to develop anything worthwhile for Outlook on Android so good ridden. Which led me to the computer issue.

Now to the computer desktop. I've used Thunderbird before and just been very disappointed it's too cheap. It's like Open Office. If you are that broke, fine, it works, use it. But just buy Microsoft Office for your projects, the interface is just so much better it's worth it, (especially with the student discount as a home-school family)!

So here are the three tools I tried and used based on the other blogs that recommended them.

    eM Client:

eM Client has IT ALL... with a catch. First the good. If you wanted a tool that does everything Outlook does at the same level (or better). The entire interface is clean, fresh, and pretty to look at. The set up is nearly identical to Outlook. There is a fully functional Calendar which integrates to Google Calendar but all the feel of Outlook calendar. There is Tasks, Contacts. Along the right side there is an Agenda tracker that keeps track of your calendar and tasks combined and a Chat box that connects to Facebook and your Contacts to send instant messages through Jabber Chat. So it's comparable to the Microsoft Lync tool that many business use for their Instant Messaging. It's got basically all in one; and all of this is FREE! It's ALSO much lighter weight code than Outlook. So I can boot it up and run it, get it doing things, read emails and close the window in the amount of time it takes my low ram computer to boot Outlook up!

What about that catch? The "Free" version only lets you have TWO email accounts connected. So if you need to track more than two email accounts that would require using a different version or upgrading to a paid version, which isn't cheap because it was designed for business to use to replace Outlook (which is why it is SO much like Outlook in the set up, as in where things are on the screen). Now I actually HAVE 5-10 (or more) email accounts. But I don't NEED that many, I just did it and started using things for different reasons. So I could either delete all of those. Or keep them for occasional use and then use a separate email client that does allow me to have many email accounts to periodically check on on those other accounts, maybe once a month or two?

    Opera Mail:

Opera Mail is ultra light weight, fairly pretty interface. Everything looks very clean! Nearly MAC clean. BUT, it's also got nearly no functionality outside of email. So if you want to access multiple email accounts and RSS feeds without slowing down your computer, but do NOT care about calendar, tasks, or other features, this is a cool tool!

In fact I might use Opera Mail as a way to periodically load it up, check all the email accounts I don't use that often (5-10 of them) and then close it down. Maybe access it once a month, or less, just to get all my email accounts under one spot. It's an idea.

Zimbra (vmware Zimbra Desktop)... The Runner Up:

Zimbra, I found, actually does, functionally all I need it to. Calendar, Tasks, Address Book, and Multiple Email accounts. But the interface is cheap looking and it "sticks" a little like my Outlook does. This computer, for now, is low RAM and I need an ultra light tool that doesn't use much RAM. It's one of the reasons I'm dumping Outlook. I couldn't get the social functions to actually work. So for me it's a no go, but if you need functionality and not pretty interface, it'll do ALL the things you NEED it to do. It just "felt" cheap and clunky" and took JUST AS LONG to boot up as Outlook, which again, was my MAIN concern!

Why would I even list it, well it DOES do all the things I needed (accept look pretty and boot up quickly) and if they figure out the Social linking it may have a step above Thunderbird... until they get that straight you may just use Thunderbird.

    ****

UPDATE: As of 01/29/2014 I've come to the conclusion that this eM client is the best Non Outlook tool there is... but it still isn't Outlook. Even though Google is convinced that somehow they've created a great "online" experience, Outlook blows that away too.

UPDATE: As of 02/09/2014 Outlook does NOT support Google Accounts UNLESS you have a business level Google Account. Forget that hot mess, continuing to use emClient which is fully integrated with Google.

However, Google came out with a solution to part of my Outlook problems. Google Sync for Outlook. I'm trying that out. I wish Google would come out with an Outlook competition for those of us not interested in the Wed Only experience.... Apparently this is only for business class Outlook users. I'll keep using emCLient. 03/02/2014

      Levels of Change Part Nine

      Foundations Class #2
      Levels of Change
      Bob Hamp

      Part Nine

A Parable: The Kingdom of God is like: Phantom Limb Syndrome

When doctors treat the symptom of the nervous system (ei: giving Tylenol when the missing foot hurts) they can actually strengthen the nervous systems embedded reactions telling the brain the leg is still in tact. It was successful temporarily, but it maintained the lie over time. This was because as the treatment made it better for a moment and then it got worse again, and more medicine made it better, but then it got worse again, and it could strengthen the programing of the brain.

      Phantom Limb Syndrome Solution

Instead some doctors who know this will instead prescribe a series of treatments that engage the new nerve endings. Touch the NEW nerve endings with hot things, cold things, prickly things, soft things, as many new sensations as possible to stimulate the NEW nerve endings, telling the nervous system through new experiences that something has indeed change, allowing the brain to be re-routed for this new information. Get the FOCUS of the brain to what is NEW THERE.

In order to allow the new nature you were born with to reprogram our nervous system we must begin to stimulate the new nerve endings, which allows the nervous system to reprogram those new experiences into our beliefs.

Many people who get saved are told to go to church, read your bible, pray, etc... Newsflash... you don't HAVE to do any of those things. They have nothing to do with your going to heaven or being saved.

However the Bible is a book full of Words written BY GOD FOR YOU and it's full of information about what has been done in you already. Instead of wrestling with a dead man who isn't there anymore we can begin to stimulate our nervous system to what is NEW in us. Going to church and being with other believers, hearing the Word Taught, but also talking WITH other believers allows us to renew our nervous system to that which is NEW there. Bible Reading, Pastors Messages, Prayer, Church Gathering, Etc are all ways to stimulate what is new about you, that which has ALREADY happened.

The more of these you do, with the mindset that you are not doing them "to become", but rather, "to discover" what you "have become", the faster we can re-program our nervous system to understand what is new about us and what has died.

The Struggle: The Old You is dead. The New You is alive. The FLESH has old programming left over from the old you. You are not fighting the old you. That you is dead. What must be done now is to teach and train the flesh that something NEW has happened.

      Levels of Change Part Eight

      Foundations Class #2
      Levels of Change
      Bob Hamp

      Part Eight

      The Enemies Of Your Change

      Enemies

There are enemies to your new life that try to crush you and keep your from seeing this New Life. Here are three enemies that will work against you, as you are aware of the Schemes of Satan you can work around these and overcome.

The battleground for your life is the place of the old you (Beliefs based on your past experiences) and the new you (Beliefs based upon that which was done in you through Christ). You don't get free from who you are until the old you is crucified on the cross.

This battleground is moving our beliefs in experience to God's new reality.

      1. Demonic Oppression
        1. Demonic activity in 21st Century USA looks different than it does in third world nations. This is because the enemy opposes you at the level you are most vulnerable. In the USA we define reality in terms of Intellect and Materialism. This is not to say we are smart and rich, it is to say that we are defining our reality by that which we can see, taste, touch, and feel, and that which we can reason. That which we can comprehend Scientifically or Philosophically.
        2. Therefore demonic activity in the USA often is seen as thoughts that are contrary to who you are In Him. "You are just so stupid..." or "I am just so stupid..." You think these are your thoughts, they are not. "You are going to fail..." or "You are the worst believer..."
        3. How can the devil attack at thoughts? You ever wake up in the morning and your favorite band is in your head? No, the band can't fit in your head. But their music is, and their music has created pathways and mental processes so that you can still hear the music even though it's not playing anymore. This is also true for stupid commercial jingles you don't want to remember. Bob says for example: "I do not have hard core rap in my head at random times. That is because I've never made a place for it or put it in me. However when some random old rock song comes on the radio I can still sing the words many years after. This is because I made place in my heart at one time for those things." Therefore if the devil attacks you at a level you have already made a place he can get in. You are most vulnerable to the songs you know very well. You must renew yourself to who you are In Him and remove the place in your heart for those old things. If he can just start the song you will finish it. "You are so dumb..." and you'll take off from there. It's like a broken record that plays so long you don't hear it conciously anymore.
        4. Demonic Oppression only gains strength as we give them more and more place. They gain strength the more that we agree with them. In the same way, as we disagree with them they loose strength.
      2. World System
        1. The world's system war against us.
          1. Family. God's primary design for Family is that it is a way to transmit blessings for thousands of generations. In this fallen system family defects often influence us. "If my Dad abandoned me it's hard to believe God will always be with me." Past family traits and experiences will work against the new us.
          2. Circumstances of your life will create past experiences which will impact belief.
          3. The Church
            1. Religion and traditions of men.
              1. Often someone stands up with a microphone and bible and addresses the crowd and we automatically attribute to them authority that may or may not actually be of God.
              2. Whole churches or whole groups of churches can become toxic as these fallacies grow from generation to generation.
              3. Because the church is a human run organization it is prone to error and as we digest that error we are soured at some level for certain things.
              4. Also because it's human run, the church can be just as toxic and damaging to a human heart as any other organization.
            1. We must make our relationship between ourselves and God, through His Word, and take anything taught by men to God for correction or revelation.
      3. The Flesh
        1. The Flesh is the part of you that you travel around in.
          1. Homework, Read: Romans 6-9
          2. Three Characters war within you:
            1. Old Nature (Sin Nature, Old Man, Dead Nature)
            2. Flesh (Body, Container, physical needs, desires, nervous system, etc)
              1. Nervous System feeds you back information about your experience. Satan is trying to program your experiences so that your nervous system will tell you things about truth or what to believe.  It CAN lie to you.
            3. New Nature (Spirit, Born Again Spirit)
        2. In Salvation the old man is crucified and buried. The nervous system has been programed by the old nature for years. Just because the old man is dead and buried doesn't mean the program stopped running. It's as though you given away your computer to someone else but don't wipe the hard drive, there is still all your old data stored in there, and viruses and still there that you didn't clean out, etc.
        3. New Nature is born inside the Flesh. The New Spirit is meant to re-program from the inside out working through you.

The Enemies to Your Change: Have no power accept that which you give them, knowingly or unknowingly. Many times you don't realize those enemies are affecting you, because you see life through a broken window, or you see yourself through a broken mirror.

      Levels of Change Part Seven

      Foundations Class #2
      Levels of Change
      Bob Hamp

      Part Seven

Identity Solution VS Old Problems ReMixed

Salvation is not about behaving correctly. It's BEING a new person on the inside. Being a Christian is not about new sets of behaviors. Salvation is not about trying harder and asking for forgiveness. It's replacing my old nature with your new nature. Jesus takes our death and gives us HIS Life.

Take a moment and ask God: "God, salvation is replacing my old nature with your new nature. Have I done that?"

The words don't matter as much as the intent of them. If you haven't; pray something like this: "Jesus, I'm dead inside. I ask you to exchange my dead nature for your free-life nature. Make me new inside."

You don't get free from what you do until you get free from who you are.

The old you is crucified on the cross and the new you is raised from the dead.

Whether you did that 10 years ago or 10 seconds ago, Christian Leaders often makes the mistake of going right back to behavior. Right after taking someone through this they take the person to a room and give them a list of new behaviors, and it doesn't stick. It's like going back to arm wrestling yourself.

This doesn't work. They assume that you can behave differently just because you have Jesus in you. This is not true. This is legalism. The old patterns of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, experiences, and environment is still there, limited by beliefs and capabilities.

Rather what must be done it not to try to become a new person. You already ARE a new person. You must now allow the new person you already are to be realized. It's not about doing, it's about surrendering to the new you. As you renew your heart to WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST, your beliefs will change as a by product.

As your beliefs change your capabilities will change, impacting how you think, act, and feel, which will change the relationships around you which creates a new environment.

Does this mean reading your bible, going to church, doing other "religious" activities is not important? No. But these things are not meant to address your need at the level of behavior. They are not so that you will "Act Better". These things are meant to renew your heart to who you are IN HIM. As you renew your heart you will belief better, which gives you higher orders of capability, which affect your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which impact the world around you for the better. Your environment (Job, Marriage, Relationships, Habits, Etc) will be affected positively for the better as a result of renewing your heart to who you are In Him. It will not require you to work or do better, nor will it require effort. It will be the natural by product of believing your new identity, and discovering what that identity is.

What do I mean by this? Let's say you find out that you are a new creation In Christ, and you have not been given a spirit of Fear but of Power, Love, and a Sound Mind.

Let's say insanity or lower versions of it, run in your family and you've spent generations worth of time as a family in and out of therapists offices. You've had an Identity of "Clinically Depressed" for so many years, maybe since childhood, that you see yourself this way. You don't Believe that you could be different, so your Limited (inCapable) of change, therefore you Think, Feel, and Act depressed, which create experiences and therefore the Environment around you confirms that you are this way.

Now you realize that YOU are not Identified with depression, but rather Identified as In Christ, a new creature full of Power, Love, and a Sound Mind. This identity allows you to Believe that you are free, freedom is not something you work for, it already belongs to you. You simply need to enforce your right. As you believe you see yourself Capable of change, Capable of living with Joy and Fullness. Because of this new found capability you Think, Feel, and Act differently. This creates new Experiences  in your relationships with people and places and therefore the Environment around you begins to confirm this change has taken place.

Identity Solution: Allow the NEW YOU to change you from the inside out
